What Content Should I Post?

I get this question a lot. Social media has taken over the marketing game. These days, it’s important for businesses to stay engaged and present online.

I’ve been told by almost every client they’re just not sure what to post though. I am here to answer that question!

When it comes to posting, there are a few things to consider.

#1. Just right off the bat: If you don’t know why you’re doing what you’re doing, this won’t make sense. You have to have a goal for your business. What is your intention?

Answer that question and everything else will fall into place. If you’re not sure or don’t care, you need to reconsider what you’re doing professionally. I am a believer in pursuing what you love.

I will use Rose Design House as an example. Why do I post the things I do? Here are the four categories of content I like to use.

Relevant content

What is your business about? Rose Design House is a creative business and design studio. We create content, marketing material and work within the wild world of art & design. Therefore, I post content I like within that industry. Favorite artists, cool concepts, creative work…anything that captures what I love about design and art. That can be anything! I am a digital designer but I also love paintings and sculpture. Anything within your general industry is relevant.

Created material

I am a designer so I obviously post content I create. Showcasing what you do is important. Do you sell products? Show them. Do you offer a service? Hire a photographer to get some cool headshots. Make an introduction. Showcase what you do and who you are. Professional photography is an absolute must here. Any content you put out needs to be professional – no more blurry phone pictures. That’s done.

Informational

What is your profession? Chances are you have people follow you who want to know more about you, but more importantly, they want to know more about what you do or offer. If you are holding back on information, people will get tired of just seeing your achievements & products. Post informational content. What do people need to know about your industry? Why is important to keep up with you? Answer questions you get the most. Share pivotal information. If you aren’t bringing value, there’s no point for people to keep checking back with you.

Supporting context

This is the style part. Aesthetic. This is where you need to hire a designer (like me!). Provide info, showcase yourself and products, share your favorite things – but also create your own style and brand. That’s long game. This can be done a lot of different ways. It does require a professional unless you’ve just got an eye for things. If that’s the case, have at it! Build context and brand through creative content. Photos, video, pattern, color, etc. etc.
